Four Specializations, One Global Standard
Diploma
The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) introduced the SCA Skills Diplomas to recognize coffee professionals who have developed expertise across multiple areas of the specialty coffee industry, rather than in a single discipline alone. These diplomas provide a structured pathway for learners to build comprehensive knowledge and demonstrate advanced competency throughout their professional careers.
Unlike individual course certificates, an SCA Skills Diploma represents the successful completion of a combination of SCA Education modules within a defined specialization. This approach encourages continuous learning and acknowledges professionals who have invested significant time in mastering interconnected skills.
The SCA currently offers five diploma pathways, each designed for a different area of expertise:
Coffee Trade Diploma focuses on green coffee, sourcing, quality evaluation, and the global coffee supply chain.
Coffee Craft Diploma emphasizes the practical skills required in roasting, brewing, espresso preparation, equipment maintenance, and water quality.
Coffee Value Assessment Diploma develops competency in sensory evaluation, descriptive analysis, and objective coffee quality assessment.
Coffee Sustainability Diploma explores environmental responsibility, social impact, and economic resilience throughout the coffee value chain.
Coffee Business Diploma strengthens knowledge in business strategy, operations, finance, marketing, and leadership within the coffee industry.
Each diploma integrates multiple educational modules, allowing learners to develop both technical knowledge and a broader understanding of how different aspects of the coffee industry work together.
Today's specialty coffee industry increasingly values professionals who possess interdisciplinary knowledge. Success is no longer determined solely by technical ability in one area, but by an understanding of quality, sustainability, business, and the relationships that connect every stage of the coffee value chain.
The SCA Skills Diplomas recognize this broader perspective by validating a learner's commitment to professional development and lifelong learning. They provide employers, customers, and industry partners with confidence that the holder has achieved an advanced level of education through internationally recognized SCA programs.
Ultimately, the Skills Diplomas create a clear educational roadmap for coffee professionals who wish to expand their expertise, strengthen their career opportunities, and contribute more effectively to the future of specialty coffee.
